Macaroni
Macaroni are small, curved tubes — just wide enough to trap a spoonful of sauce inside while staying tender-firm at the bite. The curve means they tumble together loosely rather than clumping, which makes them easy to stir and quick to dish up. At 8–10 minutes they hit a clean al dente that holds even if dinner is a few minutes late. On the family table they work as well in a quick tomato-butter sauce for the kids as they do in a layered baked dish for a larger crowd. A versatile, unfussy shape that earns its place in the weekly rotation.
Best with
- Tomato and basil (a 20-minute pan sauce)
- Macaroni and cheese (béchamel with cheddar or gruyère)
- Slow-cooked meat sauce (beef or lamb ragu)
- Butter and parmesan with a twist of black pepper
